The Tourists Are Coming! The Tourists Are Coming!

April 22, 2007

The weather is warming up a bit, and a sure sign of it is the return of the red-coated tourists to Old Town.

Art at the Market

April 21, 2007

Art on the street makes me think of Paris, where you’ll see it for sale every day in little booths along the Seine and of course in the Place du Tertre. In Alexandria we see art on the street only on special occasions: one of them is the annual Arts Festival in September, the other is the Saturday Farmer’s Market in Market Square, which is where this photo was taken.

Here’s a conversation I’ve had more than once at various locations of this venerable establishment:

Food Service Worker: Hello, may I help you?

Me: I’ll have a number three meal with a Diet Coke to go, please.

FSW: What kinda drink you want?

Me: Diet Coke.

FSW: For here or to go?

These food service workers are almost always immigrants. They’re not panhandling for spare change at the front door like the people who were born here. They work hard at a thankless job for an ungrateful public for very little money and in a language not their own.

I will repeat myself as many times and in as many permutations as they require. And without resentment.

God bless them, every one.

Reinvented Elegance

This is Joyce and her daughter. Joyce is a craftswoman who sells her creations at the farmer’s market under the business name of Reinvented Elegance. She was quite friendly and happy to talk about the refrigerator magnets she makes that I admired. Dried flowers are put on a cloth background and covered in glass. These quarter sized disks then have a small magnet glued to the back. I was very taken with these and bought several for myself as well as mailing one to an old friend in California, who absolutely loved it.

Meeting people like Joyce really makes the farmer’s market fun. I also emailed her a copy of this picture, which she loved. I bet she does something really great with it.

In some neighborhoods, the trees have already shed all of their leaves. Now comes the fun of raking and bagging. But not for me, since my condo fees pay for all exterior grounds maintenance. These leaves are nowhere near my condo. I was just circling town like a vulture, looking for likely photo carcasses wherever I could find them. My trusty cherry red Subaru waits patiently in the distance to carry me to my next photo shoot.

I’ve been abnormally quiet the last week or so in the comments because my computer is at death’s door, and I’m now only able to get online at work on my lunch hour. New one should arrive by this weekend. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the old one will live long enough so that I can transfer the data to the new one. All my ADP photos are on there!
