Ben Franklin’s theory that trees attracted lightning, spread fires and hampered fire fighting equipment caused many insurance companies to refuse to insure buildings near trees. Old Town Alexandria is lined with trees, so that would have been significant several hundred years ago. The Tree fire mark was issued in 1784 by a Philadelphia fire insurance company, signifying that they would insure buildings near trees.
