I should write an Alexandria restaurant guide because I love eating out, and I love sharing the best and most interesting places on Alexandria Daily Photo. Haven’t eaten here yet, but Al’s Steak House on Mt. Vernon Avenue has been a Del Ray landmark since 1956. Their specialty is Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.
I wonder if that telephone gets used any more.
Update: Al died in August 2015, and Al’s Steak House closed shortly thereafter.
I doubt it everybody uses mobiles
hey, the brick wall looks cool!
mmm..love a juicy steak once in a while, go in and show us the food 😉
Mmmm! I love steak!! Agree with Kris…show us the steak! 🙂
Hmmm…you want to see inside the place, eh? Well, that gives me a good reason to go there for dinner, perhaps this weekend.
Thank you all for visiting!
I have misplaced my cel on occasion, and been thrilled to find a payphone. They are not nearly as prevelant as they once were!
Al’s famous cheesesteak subs are awesome! Check out the photos inside of celebs who have visited Al’s when in town.
Al’s Steak House can’t be beat. John the owner is a dear old friend of mine and he only makes and sells the best.

I grew up on Luray Ave in Alexandria in the early 1970’s to 80’s (when Fernado Rodriquez worked there). Al’s was my favorite place to eat. To this day, I haven’t had a better steak and cheese. The Roman rocks!!
I had my first steak and cheese in the 1950’s when Al owned it. I was glad Johnny kept the food the same high quality and taste. Now when the urge hits me, I think of one for days or weeks until I can get to Alexandria and back to Del Rey for another one! I hope it never ends. George
