The church was founded in 1863 by 50 former slaves, but the present building on the corner of Duke and South West Streets was constructed in 1891. It’s my favorite church building in Alexandria, probably because I like towers.

its a beautiful church indeed with a lovely color to go with its nice design!
Nice shot. I has the look of an old postcard, which suits the subject matter perfectly.
Is it red brick or painted red? It’s a very nice looking church.
Kala and Natalie, it must have been repainted recently because it looks much brighter than it has been. I used to think it was beginning to look a bit faded until a couple of weeks ago. It may well have been red brick to begin with, as are so many of the buildings in Alexandria, but the bricks have definitely been painted brick red. It may seem silly, but paint seals the brick, which makes them last longer.
Passante, I’m fond not only of the tower, which being in Alexandria ought to have at least one ghost, but also of the windows.
Thanks for asking, natalie. I was just wondering the exact same thing.
for me it’s the paint job, white and red, beautiful!
It is beautiful. I love it.
