Two centuries ago an iron boot scraper like this one helped you clean mud off your footwear before you entered a house. This was of course long before streets and sidewalks were paved. If you live in Alexandria now, you’d have to go a long way to get any actual dirt on your shoes.

This kind of doormat is fairly common around here. I’m not sure how effective it is, but some have a nice design.
